14 This is The Way (People Would Live)

from No Schedule by Mark Basso

about

Fourteenth and final track from my album "No Schedule."

lyrics

I like your house with the indoor waterfall
I like your yard but I never see you there at all
I love your garage with all of your expensive cars
But you’ve got no time to drive them so they never really get you far

Me, I don’t live like that—gave it up so long ago
No appointments rule my life, this watch is just for show
So I’ll sit in my yard if I want to, drive my cars if I want to go
I can stay at home if I need to catch up on my favorite show

This is the way that people would live if they could afford it
Free in the day time when you can really enjoy it
No schedule tells me where I’ve got to be
I know you say they don’t bother you, it don’t seem that way to me

I play my guitar or piano, or my favorite saxophone
Stay out late every night or I can spend a quiet evening alone
See all of my friends when the regular workday ends
I can tell them about all the fun that they missed while they were out

This is the way that people would live if they could afford it
Write a new song today and tomorrow record it
No schedule tells me where I’ve got to be
I know you say they don’t bother you, well they sure as hell bother me—oh, yeah!
[SAX SOLO]
This is the way that people would live if they could afford it
Free in the day time when they can really enjoy it
No schedule tells me where I’ve got to be
You may say they don’t bother you, it don’t seem that way to me—oh, no!

Factor in to your salary all the time that you spend doing things that you dread
And tell me truthfully: is the time that you waste worth the money you can spend?

You’re sitting in traffic, I’m out on the open sea
You’re worried, got no time to spare, I’ve got my wits about me
Not going to work—can’t say that I’m jealous of you
But it’s not that I’m lazy; there are just so many other things that I’d rather do

Breakfast in Paris, then we’ll leave for the Rio Grande
If the feeling strikes us let’s kick off and spend the weekend in Japan
So why won’t you join me? Don’t you think that it would be fun?
I know you say you’re busy, well, step aside I’ll show you how it’s done

This is the way that people would live if they could afford it
The world is an oyster, I say let’s get out and explore it
No schedule tells me where I’ve got to be
I know you say they don’t bother you, well they sure as hell bother me
Bother me—oh yeah
[Unscheduled chaos ensues]
Ya mind that?
No schedule, no schedule
I know, I know
